Microsoft’s July 2026 feature drop for Excel doesn’t revolve around new worksheet functions or chart types. Instead, the entire release trains its sights on a single ambition: making Copilot in Excel more trustworthy, more connected to real business data, and less of a walled garden. The most consequential change? Inline citations that let you trace an AI-generated answer back to its source. The most welcome one? You no longer have to enable AutoSave just to use Copilot.
What Copilot in Excel Actually Gained This Month
According to reporting from Neowin, which parsed Microsoft’s monthly Excel feature roundup, five major additions rolled out across Windows, Mac, and the web:
- Inline citations – Copilot responses now include clickable source references. Hover over a citation to see the referenced file or report in a side pane, or open it directly. The goal is to make AI output auditable rather than opaque.

- @brand-kit – A new skill that applies your organization’s approved color palettes, typography, header styles, and logos to charts, tables, and other workbook elements. It’s a formatting shortcut that references a brand kit maintained by your company’s brand manager.
- @theme-design – A companion skill that reads the workbook’s structure and applies a coordinated Excel design theme—borders, color contrast, chart styling, and cell formatting—using best practices from Microsoft’s Excel design team.
Each of these appears in the July build, and none of them are hidden behind a feature flag. They’re on by default, waiting for a prompt.
Why Inline Citations Are the Real Breakthrough
Generative AI in a spreadsheet is dangerous for exactly one reason: a mistake doesn’t just read wrong—it feeds into budgets, forecasts, compliance reports, and operational decisions. Copilot in Excel has always carried a warning: “Generated content may be inaccurate.” That disclaimer is not corporate hand-wringing; it’s an honest admission that large language models hallucinate, misinterpret, or simply miss the point.

Permissions follow your identity: if you can’t see the data in Power BI, Copilot can’t show it to you.
This edges Excel closer to a front-end for organizational data. It’s not magic, and it still requires the analyst to verify assumptions. But it eliminates a lot of mechanical rework.

Instead of hunting for last year’s template or copying formatting piecemeal, you type @brand-kit and get a presentation-ready look. The risk, as with any automated formatting, is overcorrection. In heavily structured financial models, cell colors often carry semantic meaning—green for inputs, gray for subtotals, red for policy exceptions. Applying a theme blindly can erase those signals. Microsoft’s own guidance says you can disable the skills if they misbehave, but you can still invoke them explicitly later. The safest workflow: apply the formatting on a copy of the workbook first.
The Quiet Shift: AutoSave No Longer Holds Copilot Hostage
For desktop Excel users who work with local files, controlled templates, or sensitive models, the AutoSave requirement was a persistent irritant. To use Copilot, you had to let Excel automatically sync every change to OneDrive or SharePoint—whether you wanted to or not. That was a problem when you were experimenting with a model, testing scenarios, or handling data that shouldn’t be auto-propagated to collaborators until it was reviewed.
The July update changes that. Copilot in Excel on Windows and Mac now works with AutoSave turned off. Microsoft still encourages keeping it enabled for collaboration, but the mandate is gone. The company’s Copilot tips page even suggests disabling AutoSave when you want to try Copilot-generated changes without committing them automatically.
One catch: support documentation hasn’t caught up everywhere. Some older pages still state that AutoSave is required, and that discrepancy might confuse users who encounter conflicting instructions. The practical rule is simple: if Copilot works in your workbook with AutoSave off, you’re free to work that way. - Test brand-kit on a copy. If your organization has a brand kit, open a messy workbook,

In the Copilot skills interface, see which external data sources are already wired. If you’re an admin, begin a pilot with a non-critical dataset and confirm that permissions are watertight.
- Revisit AutoSave settings. If you’ve been avoiding Copilot because of the AutoSave requirement, now’s the time to experiment. But set a reminder: when you’re done testing, turn AutoSave back on for files you share.
- Manage the formatting skills. Both @brand-kit and @theme-design are enabled by default. You can turn them off in the Manage skills dialog if you prefer to control formatting manually. Disabled skills can still be invoked with an @mention, so they never fully disappear.
