Plugable UD-7400PD: A New Frontier in Multi-Monitor Docking Stations
Plugable's latest offering, the UD-7400PD docking station, is pushing the boundaries of what's possible for multi-monitor setups, enabling users to connect up to five high-resolution displays to a single host computer. This powerhouse dock is engineered for professionals who demand extensive screen real estate for tasks such as creative projects, financial analysis, and intensive multitasking workflows.
Announced at CES 2025, the UD-7400PD is making waves with its ability to drive up to five 4K displays at 60Hz or a combination of four 4K monitors and one 8K monitor. This impressive feat is achieved through a combination of USB-C and DisplayLink technologies, setting a new standard for external display support from a single USB-C port.
Unprecedented Display Capabilities
The core of the UD-7400PD's appeal lies in its remarkable display connectivity. It features one HDMI 2.1 port capable of outputting to an 8K display at 30Hz, one HDMI 2.0 port for a 4K display at 60Hz, and three DisplayLink-enabled USB-C ports that each support a 4K display at 60Hz. This flexibility allows for various configurations, including up to three 8K displays at 30Hz. Notably, this extensive monitor support is possible even with laptops that don't natively support this many external screens, such as base model M1, M2, M3, and M4 MacBooks.
Power and Charging for Demanding Setups
Beyond its display prowess, the UD-7400PD delivers robust power capabilities. It provides up to 140W of power delivery to the host laptop, a significant step up from the typical 90-99W found in many other docks. This increased power output is sufficient to charge even power-hungry laptops, including those with entry-level discrete GPUs. In addition to charging the host, a front-facing USB-C port offers up to 30W of power for charging smaller devices like smartphones and tablets. The entire dock is powered by a 180W power adapter.
Comprehensive Connectivity Options
The UD-7400PD is equipped with a wide array of ports to accommodate a full workstation setup. In total, it offers seven USB ports: five USB-C ports and two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, one of which supports BC 1.2 for faster charging. For networking, it includes a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port for a high-speed, stable internet connection. A 3.5mm audio jack for headphones or speakers and a Kensington security lock slot are also included. The connection to the host computer is made via a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port.
Design, Compatibility, and a Nod to IT
The docking station sports a slim, brushed-metal rectangular design, intended to be placed horizontally behind monitors. It is compatible with Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or newer, requiring a host computer with a full-featured USB-C port that supports video and charging.
An innovative feature aimed at IT departments is Plugable's new DockTag. This proprietary solution displays the dock's real-time status and asset details through a dynamic splash screen and a QR code. This allows for improved remote support and user self-diagnosis, streamlining troubleshooting for common issues like missing DisplayLink software.
The Plugable UD-7400PD is available for purchase at a competitive price point, making it an attractive option for users seeking to create an expansive and powerful workstation with a single, elegant solution.
