Snipping Tool Gets an Animated Upgrade: Windows 11 Now Creates GIFs

Microsoft is enhancing the screen-capturing experience in Windows 11 with a significant update to its popular Snipping Tool, enabling users to create animated GIFs directly from screen recordings. This new functionality aims to boost productivity and provide a seamless way to create and share short, shareable content.

The update, currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, Beta, and Release Preview Channels, introduces a "Create GIF" option within the Snipping Tool application. This allows users to transform their screen recordings into animated GIFs without the need for third-party software.

How to Create Animated GIFs with Snipping Tool

The process of creating a GIF is straightforward. Users can initiate a screen recording by using the keyboard shortcut Win + Shift + R or by opening the Snipping Tool and selecting the record option. After selecting the desired screen area and recording the content, the video will open in a preview window.

From there, a new "Export GIF" button in the toolbar will be available. Clicking this button presents options to choose between "low" and "high" quality for the resulting GIF. The low-quality option produces a smaller file size at 12 frames per second, while the high-quality option delivers a smoother animation at 24 frames per second.

It's important to note that the GIF export functionality is limited to recordings of 30 seconds or less. If a screen recording exceeds this duration, the Snipping Tool will offer to create a GIF from the first 30 seconds of the video. Once the quality is selected, the GIF can be saved to the user's computer or copied directly to the clipboard for easy sharing. A new keyboard shortcut, Ctrl + G, has also been introduced to directly access the GIF creation and editing interface.

Availability and How to Get the Feature

This new GIF creation feature is available in Snipping Tool version 11.2505.21.0 and higher. While it is initially being tested with Windows Insiders, users who are not part of the program may be able to enable it using the ViveTool. This involves downloading the ViveTool from GitHub and running a specific command in the Command Prompt to activate the feature.

A Welcome Addition for Content Creators

The ability to quickly generate GIFs from screen recordings is a valuable addition for creating tutorials, demonstrating software features, or sharing brief, eye-catching clips on social media. This update streamlines the content creation process by eliminating the need to convert video files to GIFs using external websites or applications.

This update is part of a series of recent enhancements to the Snipping Tool, which have included features like text extraction from screenshots and an AI-powered "perfect screenshot" tool for precise capturing. These ongoing improvements solidify the Snipping Tool's position as a versatile and essential utility within the Windows ecosystem.
