Snipping Tool in Windows 11 Now Lets You Create GIFs Directly

Microsoft is enhancing the screen capture experience in Windows 11 by adding a long-awaited feature to its native Snipping Tool: the ability to record and export animated GIFs. This new functionality, which streamlines the process of creating short, shareable clips, is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders.

Previously, creating a GIF from a screen recording on Windows 11 required third-party applications or cumbersome workarounds. With this update, Microsoft is integrating this capability directly into the operating system, making it easier for users to create tutorials, demonstrate features, or share animated reactions.

How to Record and Export a GIF

The process of creating a GIF with the updated Snipping Tool is straightforward.

  1. Launch the screen recorder: You can open the Snipping Tool's screen recording function by using the keyboard shortcut Win + Shift + R or by opening the Snipping Tool app and selecting the record option.
  2. Record your screen: Select the area of the screen you wish to capture and begin recording.
  3. Export as a GIF: Once you've finished recording, a preview of the video will appear. In the toolbar at the top, click the "Export GIF" button. You can also use the shortcut Ctrl + G.
  4. Choose the quality: You will be prompted to select either low or high quality for your GIF. The dialog will also display the duration, resolution, and frames per second of the resulting animation.
  5. Save or copy: You can then choose to save the GIF to a file or copy it directly to your clipboard for easy sharing.

It's important to note that the GIF export feature is limited to recordings of 30 seconds or less. If your video is longer than 30 seconds, the Snipping Tool will automatically offer to export only the first 30 seconds.

Availability

This new GIF creation feature is included in Snipping Tool version 11.2505.21.0 and higher. It is currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, Beta, and Release Preview Channels.

For users who are not part of the Windows Insider Program but want to enable this feature, it may be possible to do so using the ViveTool application, which allows users to enable hidden features in Windows. This involves downloading ViveTool and running a specific command to enable the feature.

Other Recent Snipping Tool Enhancements

The addition of GIF exporting is one of several recent improvements to the Snipping Tool. Microsoft has also been testing other features for Insiders, such as:

  • An AI-powered "perfect screenshot" tool that intelligently resizes the capture area based on the content.
  • A text extractor that allows you to copy text from screenshots.
  • A draw and hold feature for creating straight lines and shapes more easily.
  • A color picker to identify and copy color codes (HEX, RGB, or HSL).

These updates indicate a continued effort by Microsoft to make the Snipping Tool a more robust and feature-rich utility for all Windows 11 users.
