Windows 11 Bolsters Control, Performance, and Security with KB5060826 Update
Microsoft has released the KB5060826 preview update for Windows 11, bringing a host of enhancements to user control, system performance, and security. The update, which applies to OS Builds 22621.5549 and 22631.5549, was made available as an optional preview on June 26, 2025, for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. While not a mandatory installation, it packs a number of significant fixes and new features.
One of the most notable improvements in this update is a fix for the slow search functionality within the Start menu. Users had reported delays of over ten seconds when attempting to use the search feature, a frustration that this update aims to resolve, promising a return to a snappy and responsive search experience.
In a move to enhance user control, particularly for those in the European Economic Area (EEA), the update introduces more streamlined options for setting default applications. This includes a one-click option for browsers to set themselves as the default for opening PDF files, provided the browser registers for that file type. Furthermore, when a new default browser is set, it will be pinned to the taskbar and Start menu by default, with an option for the user to opt-out.
The update also reintroduces a feature reminiscent of "Easy Transfer" from Windows 7: a PC-to-PC backup and migration experience. Integrated into the Windows Backup tool, this feature allows for the wireless transfer of files, settings, and user profiles from an old computer to a new one, simplifying the setup process for a new device.
From a performance standpoint, KB5060826 addresses an issue that prevented the complete removal of unused language packs and Feature on Demand packages. This fix is expected to free up unnecessary storage space and reduce the time it takes to install future Windows updates.
On the security front, the update resolves a problem with audit privilege use that was generating an excessive number of security event logs. This issue could lead to the system drive filling up and, in some cases, prevent users from signing in.
Several other key fixes are included in this release:
* A fix for authentication issues on domain-joined machines connected to Windows Server 2025 domain controllers.
* A resolution for a problem that caused Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections to fail until the device was restarted.
* An address for an issue where workstations and servers would become unresponsive when connecting to Server Message Block (SMB) shares.
* An enhancement to the Windows Share window, which now displays a visual preview of links or web content being shared.
For IT administrators, the update improves the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) by providing the option to configure how critical updates are installed during the initial setup.
It is important to note that as a preview update, it is intended for testing and experiencing new features, and it is recommended for installation on non-critical devices. Users can manually download and install KB5060826 through the "Optional Updates" section in the Windows Update settings. Microsoft has also provided offline installer files for those who encounter issues with the standard update process.
While the update brings numerous improvements, Microsoft has acknowledged a known issue where CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) text may appear blurry in Chromium-based browsers at 100% scaling. A temporary workaround of increasing the display scaling has been suggested while a permanent fix is investigated.
