Windows 11 Receives Key Fixes and New Features in June 2025 Preview Update KB5060826

Microsoft has released the KB5060826 optional preview update for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, bringing a host of anticipated fixes and new functionalities. The update, released on June 26, 2025, elevates the OS builds to 22621.5549 and 22631.5549 and addresses performance issues, enhances user experience, and introduces new tools for system administrators and users alike.

One of the most significant improvements in this release is a fix for the slow search functionality within the Start menu. Users had reported frustrating delays of over 10 seconds for the search box to become responsive, an issue that has now been resolved, restoring the expected snappy performance.

The update is available as an optional, non-security preview, meaning users must manually check for updates in the Settings app to install it. It serves as a precursor to the mandatory July 2025 Patch Tuesday release.

New Features and Enhancements

This preview update introduces several new features, some of which are being rolled out gradually to users:

  • PC-to-PC Migration: A noteworthy addition is the new PC-to-PC migration experience within the Windows Backup app. This feature, reminiscent of the "Easy Transfer" tool from Windows 7, allows for the wireless transfer of files, settings, and user profiles from an old computer to a new one. The initial rollout includes the landing and pairing pages, with full support during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) planned for a future update.

  • Enhanced Windows Share: The Windows share window now displays a visual preview of links and web content, providing users with more context before sharing.

  • Default Browser Settings for EEA: For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft has implemented changes to the "Set default" button for browsers. The new default browser will now have additional file and link types set for it upon registration and will be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu unless the user opts out. A separate one-click button is also available for browsers to set themselves as the default PDF handler.

  • Improved Windows Setup for Admins: System administrators now have the ability to configure whether a new device receives critical updates during the out-of-box experience (OOBE).

Key Bug Fixes and Quality Improvements

Beyond the new features, KB5060826 includes a substantial number of bug fixes aimed at improving system stability and performance:

  • Authentication and Auditing: The update resolves an issue that caused the creation of excessive security event logs due to audit privilege use, which could fill up the system drive and prevent user sign-ins. It also fixes a problem where domain-joined machines on Windows Server 2025 domain controllers could not update their passwords.

  • Remote Desktop and Networking: A fix has been implemented for an issue that prevented Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections until the device was restarted. Additionally, an issue causing workstations and servers to become unresponsive when connecting to Server Message Block (SMB) shares has been addressed.

  • System Performance: The update tackles an issue that prevented the complete removal of unused language packs and Feature on Demand packages, which led to unnecessary storage consumption and longer update installation times.

  • Other Fixes: The release also includes fixes for expiring certificates in Windows Hello for Business not automatically renewing and an issue where kiosk devices would stop responding after being locked and unlocked by an administrator.

Known Issue

Microsoft has identified a known issue in this update concerning Noto fonts for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) languages. The text may appear blurry or unclear in Chromium-based browsers when the display scaling is set to 96 DPI (100%). As a temporary workaround, Microsoft suggests increasing the display scaling to 125% or 150%.

How to Install the Update

Users of Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 can install this optional update by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and clicking "Check for updates." The update will appear as the "2025-06 Preview Quality Update." For those who encounter issues with the automatic update, the package can be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
