Windows 11 Gets a Boost in Customization, AI, and User Privacy with KB5062552 Update

Microsoft's July 2025 security update for Windows 11, KB5062552, is now rolling out, bringing a host of enhancements to user experience, accessibility, and AI-powered features. Released on July 8, 2025, for Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2, this update introduces visual tweaks, functional improvements, and key privacy-focused additions.

One of the most user-facing changes in this update is the introduction of smaller icons on the taskbar. When the taskbar becomes crowded with open applications, the icons will now automatically resize to accommodate more apps. Users can also manually enable this feature through the Taskbar settings. Additionally, the pill-shaped indicator for open apps on the taskbar has been made wider for better visibility.

Enhanced Sharing and Backup Capabilities

Sharing files through the Windows Share interface gets a significant upgrade with a new file compression feature. Users can now choose to compress images at different levels ("Low," "Medium," and "High") before sharing, with the interface displaying the new file size in the content preview.

The Windows Backup app is also getting a preview of a new "Transfer to a new PC" feature. This will enable users to migrate their files and settings from an old computer to a new one over a local network, providing an alternative to cloud-based transfers through OneDrive.

AI and Accessibility Take Center Stage

For users with Copilot+ PCs, the "Click to Do" feature is being enhanced with a new "Ask Microsoft 365 Copilot" action. This allows sending text or images to Microsoft 365 Copilot for a response, provided the user has a Microsoft 365 license.

Accessibility sees notable improvements with this update. A redesigned Accessibility menu in Quick Settings offers greater clarity and includes text descriptions for assistive technologies like Narrator and Voice access. A significant new privacy feature for Narrator is the "Screen Curtain," which blacks out the screen while Narrator reads content aloud, which is particularly useful in public spaces. Voice access is also expanding its language support to include Simplified and Traditional Chinese and now allows users to add custom words to its dictionary.

Privacy and Regional Adjustments

In response to regulatory requirements in the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft is making it easier for users to set their default browser. A new "Set default" button in the Default apps settings will apply the chosen browser to a wider range of file and link types.

Other notable changes in the KB5062552 update include:
* The country or region selected during device setup is now displayed under Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
* A fix for an issue where the WIN + CTRL + Number keyboard shortcut for switching between multiple windows of the same app would stop working.
* Resolution of a bug that caused incorrect or unreadable characters to appear on the storage card in Settings > System > About.
* A fix for flickering media controls in taskbar preview windows.
* Improved reliability of the Copilot key, addressing an issue that prevented some users from restarting Copilot after using the key.

This mandatory security update also includes various other system stability enhancements and security fixes. The update will be automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Update, but it can also be manually installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
