Windows 11 Gets a Boost with KB5062553: New Features, Fixes, and Enhanced Security

Microsoft has rolled out the KB5062553 cumulative update for Windows 11, version 24H2, advancing the OS build to 26100.4652. This significant update, released as part of the July 2025 Patch Tuesday, delivers a host of new features, addresses numerous bugs, and strengthens the operating system's security.

Fresh Features and Enhancements

One of the most user-facing changes in this update is the introduction of smaller taskbar icons. When the taskbar becomes crowded with open applications, the icons will now automatically resize to accommodate more apps. Users can customize this behavior in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, with options to always show smaller icons, never show them, or the default setting of "When the taskbar is full".

This release also introduces a new PC-to-PC migration experience. Leveraging the Windows Backup app, this feature is designed to simplify the transfer of files and settings from an old computer to a new one over a local network, authenticated by a PIN code. While the full functionality is expected in a future update, the initial landing and pairing pages are now visible.

For users of Copilot+ PCs, the "Click to Do" menu gains a new "Ask Microsoft 365 Copilot" action, allowing for the seamless transfer of text or images to the AI assistant. This requires a Microsoft 365 license.

Other notable enhancements include:
* Faster File Explorer: Archive extraction, particularly for .7z and .rar files with numerous files, is now 10-15% faster.
* Improved Windows Share UI: The interface now offers image compression options (Low, Medium, High, or Original) for better control over file sharing quality.
* Narrator Screen Curtain: For enhanced privacy, this feature blacks out the screen while Narrator continues to read content aloud. It can be activated with the shortcut Caps Lock + Ctrl + C.
* Redesigned Accessibility Menu: The Accessibility menu in Quick Settings has been updated with clearer text descriptions for assistive technologies.
* European Economic Area (EEA) Browser Defaults: Changes have been implemented to make it easier for users in the EEA to set their default browser.

Extensive Bug Fixes for a Smoother Experience

The KB5062553 update addresses a wide array of bugs, improving system stability and performance.

For Gamers: A significant fix resolves an issue where using Alt+Tab to switch from a full-screen game could cause content and cursor position to become out of sync or lead to applications freezing. This update also tackles problems with reduced screen flashes when changing GPU settings and a bug that could cause a black screen when connecting or disconnecting a monitor.

General System and User Interface:
* An issue causing Windows Search to take over 10 seconds to load has been fixed.
* A bug that could cause explorer.exe to crash has been resolved.
* The "See more" menu in the File Explorer command bar opening in the wrong direction has been corrected.
* An issue where app windows could resize unexpectedly after the system wakes from sleep has been fixed.
* A problem preventing the proper removal of unused language packs and optional features has been addressed.
* The reliability of the Copilot key has been improved.
* A fix has been implemented for an issue where notification sounds would not play.

Enterprise and Security:
* An issue with Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) that could cause unresponsiveness has been addressed.
* A bug preventing the automatic renewal of expiring certificates in Windows Hello for Business is now fixed.
* An issue impacting Credential Roaming that prevented certificates and keys from being roamed into Active Directory has been resolved.
* A fix for Windows LAPS settings not being preserved after an in-place upgrade has been included.

Robust Security Improvements

As a mandatory security update, KB5062553 addresses 130 vulnerabilities. This includes fourteen "Critical" vulnerabilities, with ten being remote code execution flaws, one an information disclosure flaw, and two related to AMD side-channel attacks. One of the patched vulnerabilities was a publicly disclosed zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft SQL Server.

This cumulative update can be installed by navigating to Start > Settings > Windows Update and clicking "Check for Updates". It is also available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog. It's important to note that some of the new features are being rolled out gradually and may not be immediately available to all users.
