Windows 11 Start Menu Undergoes Major Redesign for Enhanced Customization and Productivity
Microsoft is rolling out a significant overhaul to the Windows 11 Start menu, introducing a host of new features aimed at improving user experience, customization, and productivity. The redesign, which is being tested in the Windows Insider channels, addresses user feedback by offering a more streamlined and adaptable interface.
A Unified and Adaptable Interface
One of the most notable changes is the move towards a larger, fully scrollable Start menu. This new design unifies the previously separate "Pinned," "Recommended," and "All apps" sections into a single, cohesive view. This eliminates the need to click into a separate "All apps" menu, as users can now simply scroll down to see their full list of installed applications.
This unified approach is designed to be more adaptable across various screen sizes and resolutions. For instance, users with larger monitors will see a more expansive layout with the capacity for more pinned apps and app categories, while the interface will be more compact on smaller devices.
Enhanced App Organization and Management
In response to user demand, Microsoft is introducing new ways to organize and manage applications. The "All apps" section now features two new organizational views: "Category" and "Grid."
The "Category" view automatically groups applications into logical categories like "Productivity" or "Games." For a category to be created, it needs to have at least three related apps; otherwise, they will be listed under an "Other" category. For those who prefer a more traditional layout, the "Grid" view presents applications in alphabetical order with a wider, more horizontally expansive layout, potentially allowing for quicker visual scanning. Users will still have the option to use the classic list view, and the system will remember the last used view.
Pin management has also been improved, with the ability to show up to eight columns of pins depending on the screen size. A "Show all pins by default" option in the settings will allow users to see all their pinned items every time they open the Start menu.
Increased Customization and User Control
A key aspect of this redesign is putting more control in the hands of the user. A frequent critique of the previous Start menu was the inability to disable the "Recommended" section. Microsoft has addressed this by providing an option to toggle off these suggestions for files, apps, and websites.
Further customization options are available through the settings menu, where users can choose to show or hide specific system icons and adjust taskbar behaviors.
Seamless Cross-Device Integration
The new Start menu also emphasizes better integration with mobile devices. A new sidebar toggle for connected devices will appear when a phone is linked, streamlining cross-device interactions. By clicking the phone icon, users can access a panel that displays their phone's status, including battery life, connectivity, calls, and messages. This feature aims to create a more seamless workflow between a user's PC and smartphone.
This substantial update to the Windows 11 Start menu is currently available to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels and is expected to be a part of a future major Windows 11 update. The changes signal Microsoft's commitment to refining the user experience based on feedback, balancing modern design with the functional needs of its diverse user base.
