Windows 11 Update Offers Greater Control Over On-Screen Indicators

Microsoft is set to roll out a highly anticipated update for Windows 11 that will allow users to customize the position of the on-screen volume and brightness indicators. This change, which addresses long-standing user feedback, will provide a more personalized and less intrusive user experience. The new feature is currently available to Windows Insiders and is expected to be released to the general public with the Windows 11 24H2 update later this summer.

For years, users have expressed frustration with the default placement of the volume and brightness indicators at the bottom center of the screen. Many found that the pop-ups would often obstruct important content, such as subtitles during media playback. In response to this feedback, Microsoft is introducing options to relocate these on-screen hardware indicators.

With the upcoming update, users will be able to choose from three positions for the volume and brightness flyouts: the default bottom center, top center, and top left. Both the volume and brightness indicators will move together to the selected location. This customization will be accessible through the Settings menu under System > Notifications.

Notably, a top-right option will not be available. This is likely to prevent the indicators from interfering with the minimize, maximize, and close buttons, which are standard in that corner of the screen.

This new level of customization is part of a broader trend of Microsoft becoming more responsive to user requests for flexibility within the Windows 11 interface. The change has been described as a "highly requested usability feature" and is seen as a significant improvement to the overall user experience.

For those eager to try out the new feature before its official public release, it is currently live in recent versions of the Windows 11 Insider Dev and Beta Channels, such as build 26200.5661. More advanced users have also found ways to enable the feature using tools like ViVeTool or by making adjustments in the Windows Registry Editor, though these methods are recommended only for those comfortable with such modifications.

In addition to the repositionable indicators, the latest test builds of Windows 11 are also experimenting with a revamped Recall homepage. This new homepage will highlight the top three most used apps and websites from the past 24 hours, providing users with a quick way to return to their recent activities.

The introduction of customizable on-screen indicators is a clear signal that Microsoft is paying close attention to user feedback and is committed to providing a more adaptable and user-friendly operating system. As Windows 11 continues to evolve, users can likely expect to see more such improvements that prioritize personalization and usability.
