GPD is giving the public its first look at a radically redesigned Win Max 3 at ChinaJoy 2026 this week, moving the clamshell handheld line to AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ platform and introducing a modular battery and cooling system that lets users physically separate the device into lighter or more powerful configurations.

The prototype, shown at booth S392 from July 31 through August 3, packs a 9.06-inch 165Hz OLED display, up to a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor with Radeon 8060S graphics, and as much as 128GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory. It also adds a 97Wh removable battery module and an external 110W fan unit, pushing the machine’s weight past 1.2 kilograms when fully kitted out. That is not a typo—this handheld-cum-laptop can tip the scales at over a kilogram, which alone signals a fundamental shift in how owners will use it.

A Tiny Laptop That Splits in Two

The Win Max line has always blurred the line between a gaming handheld and an ultra-compact notebook, but the Win Max 3 takes that hybrid identity further by making parts of the chassis interchangeable. The base unit, without modules, measures 207 x 147 x 34mm and weighs 815 grams. Slot on the 97Wh battery pack and you get a 207 x 180 x 34mm device at 1,220 grams. Swap that for the external cooling module instead and the footprint shrinks back to 207 x 147 x 34mm with a weight of 985 grams. The idea is straightforward: users who want maximum portability can leave the battery behind, though that will require staying tethered to a power source. Those who need all-day uptime can accept the heft. And if you plan to play demanding titles or run sustained heavy workloads, you attach the cooler and presumably crank up the TDP. This modularity is unprecedented in a device this small, and it sidesteps the typical trade-off between battery life, thermal headroom, and portability. However, it also means the Win Max 3 is less a pick-up-and-play handheld and more a configurable mini-PC that happens to have built-in controllers.

OLED and Strix Halo: A Generational Leap

The display upgrade is dramatic. GPD is swapping the 10.1-inch IPS panel of the Win Max 2 for a smaller 9.06-inch OLED screen with a 2,400 x 1,504 resolution. The panel supports 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, and 165Hz refresh rates, plus HDR10. The flagship 395 packs 16 CPU cores, 40 Radeon 8060S compute units, and a 256-bit memory interface that supports up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X-8000 RAM. The 388 variant reportedly keeps the full 40-CU GPU configuration but trims the CPU core count, making it a potentially more cost-effective pick for gaming-focused users who do not need the extra processing threads.

Strix Halo is AMD’s most aggressive integrated-graphics platform yet, designed to rival entry-level discrete GPUs while retaining the power and space savings of an APU. For a nine-inch device, this silicon opens up a striking range of possibilities: native Windows 11 gaming at 1080p to 1440p with FSR or in-engine scaling, emulation up to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, local AI workloads via the 50 TOPS NPU, and even virtual machine hosting with the generous memory ceiling. The Win Max 3 can also serve as a compact workstation replacement when docked to external monitors, keyboards, and storage, especially in the 128GB configuration.

M.2 2280 and M.2 2230 slots, plus a Mini SSD 1517 slot, provide plenty of storage expansion.

Power users and IT professionals may find the 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 model uniquely compelling. It can run Hyper-V, Docker containers, or development tools locally without immediately needing a full-sized laptop. The ability to separate the battery means you could leave the bulky module at a desk and carry the 815g base unit to a meeting, plugged into a USB-C monitor for a lightweight presentation rig. That is a usage model few handhelds offer.

Gamers, however, should temper expectations. Although the Radeon 8060S is potent for integrated graphics, modern AAA titles at native 2,400 x 1,504 resolution will often require low or medium settings even with upscaling enabled. The 165Hz refresh rate is best exploited in lighter esports titles, classic games, or streaming scenarios. The physical controls—capacitive joysticks and Hall effect triggers—appear competent, but the clamshell form factor is never going to feel as ergonomic as a dedicated gamepad-first handheld. It is better to think of the Win Max 3 as a tiny laptop that also plays games, rather than a pure gaming machine.

How We Arrived at a Modular Handheld

GPD’s Win Max line started with the original Win Max in 2020, a pocketable clamshell with an Intel processor. The Win Max 2 followed in 2022 with AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800U, and it saw yearly refreshes through the Ryzen 7 7840U and finally the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in 2024. Each iteration bumped performance but kept the same basic shell. The Win Max 3 is the first full redesign, and it arrives as AMD transitions to a new performance tier with Strix Halo.

This story also reflects broader trends in the Windows handheld market. Asus, Lenovo, and Ayaneo have all pushed power limits higher with larger batteries and improved cooling, but none have gone as far as GPD’s detachable modules. The decision likely stems from thermal physics: cooling a 45W to 110W APU in a 34mm-thick chassis requires airflow that a conventional handheld cannot provide. Externalizing the fan is a brute-force but effective answer.

Simultaneously, Notebookcheck reports that GPD is also developing an Intel Arc G3 Extreme version of the Win Max 3, though details remain scarce. That model would presumably use Intel’s discrete Arc graphics and target a slightly different audience, but for now the ChinaJoy prototype focuses exclusively on AMD silicon.

What to Do Now (It Is Not Time to Buy)

The Win Max 3 is still a prototype. GPD has not announced pricing, final configurations, an Indiegogo campaign date, or a shipping timeline. While early hands-on coverage from ChinaJoy should clarify keyboard quality and build feel in the coming days, purchasing decisions are months away at best. If you were considering a Win Max 2 refresh, it may be wise to wait and see how the Win Max 3 shapes up, especially given the OLED and performance improvements.

There are a few practical points to watch. First, the Win Max 3’s port list does not currently include OCuLink, which the Win Max 2 offered for direct PCIe external GPU connections. USB4 works with many eGPU enclosures, but it lacks the same dedicated bandwidth. If a desktop-class GPU dock is critical to your setup, verify compatibility before committing.

Second, the removable battery’s 97Wh capacity is just shy of the 100Wh limit that often triggers extra airline scrutiny, but individual carrier policies vary—check before flying. Keep in mind that actual runtime will depend heavily on TDP settings. At full tilt, even 97Wh will drain quickly. Plan on using lower performance profiles or carrying a USB-C power bank for extended unplugged sessions.

Third, early adopters should temper their enthusiasm about the 165Hz OLED. While it is a gorgeous spec, Windows scaling on a 2,400 x 1,504 nine-inch display can be finicky with older applications. Expect to fiddle with display scaling percentages and per-app compatibility settings. Similarly, treat the claimed 1,050-nit brightness as a peak HDR figure; sustained brightness for desktop use will almost certainly be lower.

What Comes Next

The Win Max 3’s public debut marks the end of the rumor phase and the beginning of actual buyer research. Subsequent reports from ChinaJoy will likely fill in details about the keyboard, control feel, and cooling noise. After that, the spotlight shifts to GPD’s crowdfunding timeline and whether the company can price this modular marvel aggressively enough to compete with the Steam Deck OLED and Asus ROG Ally X on the low end, while undercutting premium ultrabooks on the high end. A realistic launch window appears to be the third quarter of 2026, according to Notebookcheck’s earlier reporting, but nothing is official.
