Microsoft has begun testing a powerful new recovery feature for Windows 11 that can roll your entire PC back to a working state within minutes. Called Point-in-Time Restore, it automatically captures snapshots of your system drive every 24 hours and lets you revert to one from up to 72 hours ago—even if Windows won't start properly. The feature is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview channel (builds 26100.8313 and 26200.8313) and will eventually make its way to all Windows 11 users.
But there's a catch: because Point-in-Time Restore rewinds everything on the Windows installation volume—including your personal files—you need to know exactly what you're doing before you click that button. Here's how it works, who gets it, and the steps you must take to avoid losing important work.
What's new: a full-system undo button
Point-in-Time Restore is more than a simple update uninstaller. It's a comprehensive rollback that returns the Windows volume (typically C:) to the exact state it was in at a chosen restore point. According to Microsoft's documentation, those restore points include the operating system, installed applications, settings, and all local user files stored on that drive. Nothing is scoped out.
The feature uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), the same technology behind Windows' previous System Restore, but with a much broader scope. Restore points are captured automatically in the background, and they're stored locally on the device within the system reserved storage. By default, a fresh snapshot is made approximately every 24 hours, and each one is kept for 72 hours before being removed—or sooner if disk space runs low.
You can see and configure these settings under Settings > System > Recovery > Point-in-time restore. The defaults are sensible for most home users: feature on (except on enterprise-managed devices), 24-hour frequency, 72-hour retention, and a maximum disk usage of 2% of your system drive. Microsoft is also giving administrators fine-grained control through CSP and Group Policy, including the ability to set custom intervals and retention windows.
What this means for you—and when you'll get it
Home users on retail Windows 11:
The feature isn't on your PC yet unless you're running the latest Insider builds. But when it arrives (most likely with the 24H2 feature update later this year), it will be turned on by default on Windows Home and Pro editions that aren't managed by an organization—provided your system drive is 200 GB or larger. For machines with smaller drives, you can enable it manually and adjust the storage cap.
If an automatic update, new driver, or application installation makes your computer unstable, you'll be able to reboot into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), pick a restore point, and be back up and running in minutes instead of hours. No need to reinstall Windows or hunt for a specific patch.
But the convenience comes with responsibility: because the rollback touches everything on C:, any document you created after the selected restore point, any app you installed, or any setting you changed will vanish. If those files haven't been synced to the cloud or backed up elsewhere, they're gone. That's why the very first thing you should do is verify your recent work is protected.
Power users and tinkerers:
You'll appreciate the speed and completeness. If you like to test beta software or tweak system settings, Point-in-Time Restore is a quick safety net. But you also know that cloud-sync services like OneDrive or Google Drive can complicate things. After a rollback, your local files may be older than what's in the cloud, triggering sync conflicts that need manual resolution. The same goes for browser profiles, game saves not backed up by a cloud service, and any app that maintains a local database.
For you, configuration matters. You can adjust the snapshot frequency to more than once a day (using CSP if you're on Enterprise, or through Settings if you have the option) and bump the retention period. Just remember: all restore points are temporary and automatically cleaned up, so don't mistake this for a backup strategy.
IT administrators and managed workplaces:
Point-in-Time Restore is off by default on enterprise-managed devices until Windows 11 version 26H2. After that, you'll be able to push policies to turn it on, set organization-wide frequency and retention, and cap disk usage. More importantly, you'll need to ensure your helpdesk has a reliable way to retrieve BitLocker recovery keys—without that key, an encrypted PC cannot be restored.
This tool can drastically shorten recovery time when a fleet-wide driver or software update goes wrong. But it's not a replacement for regular backups, and it won't help with data stored on secondary drives. As one WindowsForum reader noted, if your project files live on D: and Windows lives on C:, rolling back the OS won't touch those files. Make sure your users know where their data actually sits before they pull the rollback trigger.
How we got here: from System Restore to full-volume snapshots
Traditional System Restore has been a part of Windows for decades, but it always focused on system files, drivers, and the registry—not your personal data. Over the years, it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't, and its selective nature meant a complex problem could slip through because the root cause wasn't caught by the snapshot.
Point-in-Time Restore is a direct response to that unpredictability. By capturing the entire system volume, Microsoft ensures that if a recent change broke something, the rollback will bring you back to before that change happened—whether the culprit was a driver, a Windows update, or an application install. Windows Central's reporting notes that Microsoft began testing the feature in early July 2024 in the Release Preview channel, and it has been gradually refining it since.
The move also aligns with Microsoft's broader push toward "Windows resilience." In recent years, the company has added features like cloud recovery, Windows Backup app, and the ability to restore from a cloud download during a reset. Point-in-Time Restore sits between those options: faster than a full reset, more thorough than a settings repair, but short-term and entirely local.
What to do now: a practical checklist
If you're already on an Insider build with the feature active, or you're planning ahead for its general release, here's how to prepare:
- Find your BitLocker recovery key. If your system drive is encrypted (which it likely is on modern PCs), you'll need the 48-digit key to initiate a restore from WinRE. You can look it up at aka.ms/aadrecoverykey with your Microsoft account. Write it down or save it somewhere accessible from another device.
- Check that the feature is on. Open Settings, go to System > Recovery > Point-in-time restore. If the toggle is off, turn it on. If you don't see the option at all, your build doesn't support it yet.
- Review recent file changes. Before you ever need to recover, get in the habit of saving important work to a cloud-backed folder (OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.) or to a secondary drive. Point-in-Time Restore is a last resort; treat it as such.
- Know your restore points. You can view available points and their disk usage from the same settings page. If a point is too old, it won't help with your current problem.
- Plan for cloud sync. After a rollback, cloud storage apps may show conflict prompts. You'll have to choose which version to keep. If you're recovering from a major system failure, don't rush through these dialogs.
- Test in a controlled way. If you're a power user, try entering WinRE (hold Shift while clicking Restart in the Start menu) and navigating to Troubleshoot > Point-in-time restore to see the interface. Don't actually restore without a reason, but verify you can get there.
Microsoft's support article warns that the process can fail if there's not enough free space, if file-system corruption is present, or if power is lost during the restore. So keep your laptop plugged in, and don't attempt a rollback if your drive is already showing signs of failure.
What to watch next
Point-in-Time Restore is expected to ship broadly with the Windows 11 2024 Update (version 24H2), which is currently in the Release Preview channel. Microsoft has not given an exact date, but historical patterns suggest a fall rollout for the general public. By then, the feature should be well-documented and stable.
We'll be watching for any last-minute changes, such as extended retention options or integration with Windows Backup for additional off-device snapshots. The real test, however, will be in the field: how well it handles real-world chaos like a botched driver rollout or a power outage in mid-rollback.
